Grimal’s Obsession

Grimal Grove was an intriguing place to visit, but its state was devastating. After hearing its purpose and how it has impacted the local community, I was further motivated to work and help out in any way I could. Grimal’s obsession with obscure plants was transformed into a place that educates the community about food insecurity. I participated in yard work, which is unusual for me, but I enjoyed myself as I knew how it would benefit the nearby residents as the place was rebuilt from the hurricane’s damage. The story of the owner was also inspiring because he is working mostly alone to complete the arduous task of rebuilding Grimal Grove. He perseveres although I’ve witnessed how difficult of a task it is to complete. Although I normally don’t think of the agricultural ways to aid a community, I was definitely impressed with how Grimal Grove has touched the Keys for the past 5 years. The Keys need more help than I could have imagined and it’s rejuvenating to focus on others and help others who need it. Overall, this volunteer experience was interesting and refreshing after seeing the impact of our work.
