When I first stepped through the doors of orientation, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I knew I was joining an incredible group of service-minded students, but that was really it. However, I wasn’t expecting how quickly a group of strangers could start to feel like a community.
One of my favorite parts of the experience was taking the True Colors personality test and learning about my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. It taught me that leadership comes in multiple styles, and becoming a better leader is about supporting everyone’s different talents and skills in a group.
I also thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet everyone else in the Student Service Program. The Small Magic Foundation presentation opened my eyes to the fact that everyone has different passions and causes for why they serve. It was really motivating to hear about the impact my classmates had already started to make in their communities. It pushed me to dream a little bigger and think about the impact I can make in my own community.
By the end of orientation, I left with more than just information about the Ryan Nece Foundation and Student Service Program. I left with new friendships, new inspiration, and excitement for everything that awaits us during the next two years. I’m so incredibly grateful to be a part of a group that shares the same passion for service and leadership, and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together as we grow to serve.
