Recently, we have been catching up with our Student Service Program (SSP) alumni.
The goal of the Student Service Program is to help shape and mentor the next generation of servant leaders in our community. Through the program’s leadership curriculum and service projects, it is our hope to ignite a spark in the students so they experience a renewed sense of purpose that will reflect in the service work they continue throughout Tampa Bay and beyond.
In today’s “Where Are They Now?” series, we hear from Sofia Castillo.
Update us! What has been going on with you since you went through the Student Service Program (SSP)
I just finished my first year at Florida International University and I will be starting the honors college this fall. This year, I completed my minor in theatre and I am now pursuing a bachelor’s in public policy and sociology.
How would you say the SSP influenced your life?
The SSP has brought me great friendships and a sense of service that I am carrying with me as I study public policy. It truly instilled a love for nonprofit work, as well as seeking out service opportunities whenever I can.
What have you learned from SSP that you continue to use on a regular basis?
The phrase, “If not you, then who? If not now, then when?” has stayed with me since SSP and I apply these words to my life on a regular basis.
What is your favorite memory from SSP?
Either the service trip to Panama City Beach or D-Line Delivers!
Anything you would like to tell future SSP members?
Be present at the events and value the time you have with your class. There is always something to learn.
Final thoughts?
I loved my time with SSP and am so grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of it. I wish SSP the best!
